Description

Date: Monday, 1 December Time: 7 pm - Amricani Cultural Centre Language: English We invite you to attend the lecture, "Arabic Calligraphy in China and on China: Objects in The al-Sabah Collection and the Tareq Rajab Museum," presented by Yueling Li. The talk examines how Chinese and Islamic calligraphic traditions interact, tracing Arabic inscriptions in China from the 7th century to today. These inscriptions—found on ceramics, paper, and other materials—served religious, practical, magical, and identity-related purposes for Muslim communities. The lecture highlights Sini calligraphy, the Chinese style of Arabic script, through selected objects from The al-Sabah Collection and the Tareq Rajab Museum. Yueling Li is a PhD student in Art History at the University of Michigan, specializing in Chinese art and its exchanges with the Islamic world. She has training in art practice, museum education, ceramics conservation, and cognitive science. She has worked with The al-Sabah Collection and the Tareq Rajab Collections in Kuwait and contributed to curating a joint DAI/TaSC exhibition.
