We invite you to attend the lecture, “The Art and Reception of Ancient Assyria”, presented by Dr. Paul Collins.
Since their arrival at the British Museum some 170 years ago, the palace sculptures of Assyria from northern Iraq have drawn crowds of admirers to view what are undoubtedly some of the greatest carvings from antiquity. This talk will focus on the images commissioned by powerful kings of the seventh century BCE, when the Assyrian empire dominated the area from Iran to Egypt. It will explore both their ancient meanings and their modern reception.
Dr Paul Collins is Keeper of the Middle East Department at the British Museum. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Previously he was Professor of Ancient Middle East and Jaleh Hearn Curator at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford. His research interests include ancient Near Eastern studies, focusing on Mesopotamia in the third millennium BCE and the Neo-Assyrian period. He has worked as a curator in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the British Museum.
