Reading Club: The City and the Dogs

The Reading Club at #Huroof_Cultural_Center is pleased to announce the upcoming reading club.

We return to Mario Vargas Llosa, the Nobel Prize winner and one of the most famous names in Latin American literature. This time, we go back to the beginnings, with a novel eagerly awaited for its Arabic translation, which will be published for the first time in 2025. Although it is Llosa's first novel, published in 1963, it has won and been nominated for several awards, launching his career and establishing him as a prominent figure in world literature.

Within the walls of a military school in Peru, intersecting stories of boys learning to live between fear, violence, and friendship unfold, their dreams entangled with the authority of the institution and society. As is typical of Llosa's style, with multiple voices and intertwined times, he poses questions about the human being shaped by education when cruelty is adopted as a methodology.

The Reading Club at Huroof Cultural Center invites you to read this work and discuss it, discovering aspects of Llosa's fictional world in its beginnings and formation, especially since the work reflects a part of the biography of our Peruvian author, who spent two years of his academic career in the military college.
