بدأت الحفريات الأثرية ضمن مشروع صندوق الآغا خان للثقافة في قلب القاهرة الإسلامية، بعد اكتشاف سور المدينة الذي يعود إلى القرن الثاني عشر. وساهم المشروع في ربط الحديقة الجديدة بالمدينة التاريخية، وتوسّع ليشمل دراسة الجدران الشرقية للقاهرة المملوكية. وقد شكّلت هذه المبادرة فرصة فريدة لفهم النسيج العمراني للقاهرة في العصور الوسطى، وأسفرت عن إنشاء أكبر مدرسة ميدانية للآثار الإسلامية في المنطقة. برادين، المتخصص في العمارة العسكرية والثقافة المادية الإسلامية، أدار عدة بعثات أثرية وله مؤلفات عديدة في هذا المجال.

We invite you to attend the lecture, "Archaeological excavations in Islamic Cairo, 2000-2016", presented by Dr. Stephane Pradines.
In 1998, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture launched a major park project in Islamic Cairo. The discovery of Salah ed-Din’s 12th-century city wall in 1999 allowed for the integration of restoration efforts, linking the park to the historic city. The archaeological mission expanded to study Cairo’s fortifications and medieval urban fabric, establishing the largest Islamic archaeology field school in Egypt and the region.
Stephane Pradines is an archaeologist and Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at London's Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations. He was the director of many excavations in Cairo, the Indian Ocean and East Africa. He is a specialist of Muslim material culture of war: military architecture, and arms and armour and also of medieval trade in the Indian Ocean and Swahili archaeology and architecture. He is the author and editor of many books, most recently Muslim Cultures in the Indian Ocean (2023)
