We are thrilled to invite you to the screening of the documentary film Monumenting and the opening of its accompanying exhibition And then, they start to matter
Join us on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 7 PM
The event is presented by researcher and scholar Anahi Alviso-Marino, the director of the film and curator of the exhibition.
What makes a monument become a monument? In Monumenting (53’), participants in a game-like protocol engage with this and other questions by guessing rather than asserting what they know. They take us to Dubai, Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi and Sana’a - places where they live, have lived, or perhaps neither. Their kaleidoscopic exchanges produce a different kind of knowledge about the future of the past, about what monuments are and what they could become.
As a preamble to the film screening, the exhibition And then, they start to matter displays a treasure trove of selected research and archival materials gathered throughout fieldwork retracing monument stories reflected in the documentary film, and beyond.
Together, the film and exhibition invite viewers into the evolving biographies of monuments - and the many meanings they come to hold.

ما الذي يجعل التذكار يصبح تذكارًا؟ في التذكار (53 ')، يشارك المشاركون في بروتوكول مشابه للألعاب بتوقعات بدلاً من التأكيد على ما يعرفونه. يأخذوننا إلى دبي، مدينة الكويت، أبو ظبي وصنعاء - الأماكن التي يعيشون فيها، عاشوا فيها، أو ربما لا شيء. تولد تبادلاتهم الكاليدوسكوبية نوعًا مختلفًا من المعرفة حول مستقبل الماضي، حول ما هي التذكارات وما يمكن أن تصبح.
كمقدمة لعرض الفيلم، يعرض المعرض ومن ثم، يبدأون بالأهمية كنزًا من المواد البحثية والأرشيفية المختارة التي تم جمعها طوال العمل الميداني في إعادة تتبع قصص التذكارات المنعكسة في الفيلم الوثائقي، وما وراء ذلك.
معًا، يدعو الفيلم والمعرض المشاهدين إلى السيرورات المتطورة للتذكارات - والعديد من المعاني التي يمكن أن تحملها.
