The Last Star Project
Written by Sami Abou Saleh
Firstly, I would like to thank the entire staff & faculty at AUK for making this production a reality. I would also like to thank the team at the APO Honors society, for aiding us throughout this entire production and finally Professor Q Mars Haeri for guiding me throughout the completion of this script.
This project, “The Last Star” began in the early weeks of Spring semester of 2024 as part of a short course on Playwriting, as taught by Professor Q, who has just recently left the institution.
The playwriting course focused on character-building, world-building and developing a proper intricate script that everyone could learn from. Coming from a mixed background myself, The Last Star was meant to question what it really means to live in an industrialised world, more specifically, in a society that is new to industrialisation.
How is family affected? Marriage? Are people right to question an ever-expanding globalised world? Or should they play the game in order to succeed? In this story we are introduced to two Kuwaiti characters who experience these questions in real-time; Tarek, the older brother who wants his sister to reject an industrialised Kuwait and Fahad, the perfect example of a globalised citizen, yet attaining to some aspects of Kuwaiti culture who wants to marry Tarek’s sister Layan.
The Last Star was never meant to give you an answer to these questions, byt rather open the conversation for all people alike to begin to understand how society can shift at any given moment and what fallout might occur from it. I hope The Last Star can be an inspiration for playwrights, writers and all sorts of Creative-thinkers to begin to put their beautiful ideas on paper so that we can all become closer together by enjoying the art of Theatre. Thank you all for coming, and may we see an age of beautiful playwrights in a time soon to come.

Message from Abdallah Khuraibet
My name is Abdullah Khuraibet. I’ve been a lover of music for nearly my entire life. As a violinist and composer, I believe that music has the power to transcend barriers and touch the depths of the human soul. I joined this play because I love combining my passion for music with the excitement of a theatre play. I would like to see more drama and music in AUK because it helps students grow and express their creativity as a different type of art. I really enjoy The Last Star because of its engaging story and the deep emotions of the characters, which make it a fantastic experience both to watch and perform in.
